Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils extracted from plants to promote physical and mental well being. It stimulates the body to heal itself, and is particularly useful for treating long-term conditions such as stress. Aromatherapy dates back to the Egyptians, and has been used ever since to support the body's various systems. For example, peppermint essential oil is good for settling digestion and juniper essential oil is beneficial for detoxing. Essential oils can be burned in a diffuser, added to your bath, even made into a perfume, but the best way to achieve the maximum benefit is to use them in a massage blend with an appropriate carrier oil. This is because the skin absorbs the oils very quickly, allowing them to achieve the maximum effect. In addition, massage is extremely relaxing and good for reducing stress, so you get a double whammy!
What are the benefits of Aromatherapy Massage?
This in part depends on what you want to achieve, which we would discuss during the initial lifestyle consultation. Common benefits include:
* Deep state of relaxation
* Easing muscular aches and pains
* Helping to lift the mood
* Improving the functioning of digestive and lymphatic systems (essential for detoxing)
* Reducing anxiety
The benefits of an aromatherapy massage can last for up to 7 days. I can also provide tailor made products for you to continue using at home, for example, body lotion, hand or foot cream, or a blend to add to your bath.
What does Aromatherapy Massage involve?
The aromatherapy massage starts with an initial lifestyle consultation where we would discuss the current state of your health, your diet and exercise regime, and what you want to achieve from the treatment. I do not use pre-blends, I will make up a blend of essential and carrier oils to fit your exact needs at each session. Once you are happy with the blend, you will need to remove your clothes except for your pants, and lie face down on the bed.
Towels are provided, and they are warmed whenever possible! I will start by carrying out the massage on the back of the body, and then turn you over to complete the front, I will pay special attention to any areas you have highlighted to me. I will finish by doing some pressure points and gentle massage on your face and hair, however if you don't want this it can be omitted. Once the massage is over, I will give you some time to come back to yourself, and provide you with some water.
I will then go through some aftercare advice with you, suggesting any changes to your diet or lifestyle I think are required, and make up any products you may need. This is an intense treatment, so it is best not to have too much planned for the remainder of the day - trust me, you won't want to do anything other than enjoy the feeling!
