Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves the application of pressure to specific points, known as reflexes, on the feet to encourage the body to heal from within. The therapy is based on the principle that the feet contain 'mini-maps' of the whole body and that by applying pressure using the fingers or thumbs a reflexologist can have a positive effect on the corresponding parts of the body.
What are the benefits of Reflexology?
In general terms, the benefits of reflexology have to do with the reduction of stress. Because the feet help set the tension level for the rest of the body, they are an easy way to interrupt the stress signal and reset the body's equilibrium. In addition, reflexology can help to:
*Alleviate long term conditions
* Extremely relaxing
* Improves circulation
The effects will last about a week in the first instance but over time will have a longer lasting impact.
What is involved in a reflexology treatment?
The first thing to say is don't worry if you have tickly feet! The pressure used is quite strong - the thumb, fingers, knuckles are used to press into the feet, so there is no tickling sensation. After a detailed lifestyle consultation, where we will look at your health and any specific problems you are experiencing, you will either sit or lie on the couch, which ever you prefer, and get snuggly under fleecy blankets!
You will need to remove your socks and shoes and roll up your trouser legs, or remove them if it is more comfortable. I will start by cleansing the feet with an essential oil spray, this also gives me the opportunity to examine the condition, colour and shape of the feet - all of which can tell me a lot about your situation. I then start by gently massaging the feet with a rich foot lotion, before wrapping up the left foot and starting on the right foot. I will work on both feet alternatively and together, finishing with a final massage. Once the treatment is over, I will allow you time to come back to yourself and provide you with some water. We will then discuss relevant changes to your lifestyle regime which may be of benefit to you.
